What is the meaning of the two of Cups in a tarot reading?

This card portrays partnership, a union based in equality, a relationship whereby two individuals connect deeply….,it speaks of an emotional choice.

How to read the two of cups? Start by looking at the card and the symbols on the card, at the staff of Hermes and image of two snakes entwined that suggest the union of separate entities. Above them a lion’s head speaks of fire and passion and Angel wings speak of the spiritual connection of this coupling.

Using word association to understand the meaning of the two of cups…

The two of cups in a reading it reminds us we have a choice to share our heart in all its beauty, pain and fragility and connect deeply with someone or something you love. It is the minor to the Lovers in the major Arcana. The initial choice if you like.

the lovers tarot card

The Lovers is the major to the two of cups, the Ultimate choice to connect….

In the two of cups we see two people of the same size holding out cups to each other also of the same size, reflecting a partnership of equality, a relationship of affinity and based in mutual trust,  a soul mate relationship that is based in a union of forces.

My soul mate and best friend Trumpet….with whom I fell ‘in love’..

Although the two of cups immediately conjures a romantic relation between a man and a woman it can just as easily refer to a platonic relationship, or a relationship to something else for which we have that spark of desire and deep connection, a friend, our job, a hobby, our pet, a passion for music, the sea, our spiritual practice. We are nourished by this kind of connection. It is also card that speaks to the generosity and openness necessary for such an exchange to happen and the universal law of Reciprocity. What we give, we receive, what we sow, we reap.  Therein lies the beautiful exchange offered within the two of cups.

So what does it take to risk falling in love? Plenty.

First it is a choice, number 2 in the cup suit, an emotional choice.  All 2’s in Tarot signify choice. A choice to connect with another to form a partnership. Not easy when we have been through heartbreak or betrayal, but the gentleness of the image on this card assures us it will be worth it. It is the card of ‘falling in love’ and encourages us to follow our heart, to leave our wounds behind, along with our projections (easy to say), and any defensiveness (boundaries to be maintained always) and trust in the mutual attraction and emotional compatibility this card promises.

Do have a tarot reading with me online via Whatsapp, Zoom or Teams.   We have become so good at connecting online, enabling the readings to be just powerful. Rather like the two of cups when two people come together in a fully heartfelt way the tarot cards respond by giving the insight and support needed. Clearly the influence of two of Cups is at hand
