What’s the best way of learning the meaning of Tarot cards?

For me, it’s a bit of play. I enjoy getting a large piece of paper and scribbling down all the words I associate with the card… 

No 4 in the Major Arcana the Emperor represents structure and stability.

For instance when I look at the Emperor, first he’s a number 4 in the major arcana.  4 sides of a square.  Structure, stability.   He sits on a throne. Leader.  Authority figure.  Control. I think of him as the quintessential ‘Daddy’ strong dependable, wise (see the grey beard of wisdom), head of the family.   And my kind of man if he’s not too ‘strong’ as there’s always the possibility of rigidity with the Emperor, what he says goes.

A man of discipline, determination (just look at the goat’s heads on the arms of his throne, nothing will stop a goat, and the sign of Taurus, bull headed).  He ‘armours up’ his emotions in order to empower himself.   He has strong boundaries! 

So questions you might like to ask yourself when you get the Emperor in a reading might be?

How do I empower myself?

How do I claim my authority?

How can I establish stronger boundaries ?

With every card there’s two sides to consider so you might also ask

How do I create order without cramping my uniqueness? Without crushing what make me fully alive?

What kind of order do I want to build?

Where is the balance for me between discipline and freedom and spontaneity? Because discipline and control can become oppressive..  it's always worth asking yourself being able to weigh up the pros and cons and ‘what are the benefits’? ‘to whom?”

The interesting thing in the Wheel of Becoming, the opposite and complimentary major arcana card is the Tower, when we realise the structure we have built on has dodgy foundations…quite often it is a moment when we have to take down…or to continue the metaphor dismantle the scaffolding on which we have built our ideas?

Sometimes I like to link words with the visuals, as in the armour he has on underneath his robe suggesting the need to armour up his emotions in order to be strong. Other times into categories.
